Sr. Agnes Murray, OSU

Sister Agnes Murray, OSU, died peacefully on May 23. Also known as Sister Patricia, she was 94 years old and living at St. Andrew’s at Francis Place in Eureka, Missouri.

The daughter of Thomas and Delia Lennon Murray, she was born on July 2, 1931, in County Roscommon, Ireland. She entered the Ursuline community on March 16, 1950, and professed her vows on Sept. 16, 1952. She received a bachelor’s degree in education from Incarnate Word College.

Sister Agnes taught primary and elementary grades in schools throughout the Central Province and beyond, spending many years of ministry in Texas.

In Laredo, she taught at St. Peter’s Memorial School from 1952-53 and 1961-64; Ursuline Academy from 1953-55, 1968-70,1982-83 and 1988-90; Our Lady of Guadalupe School from 1955-58 and St. Augustin Elementary School from 1990-95. She taught in the Laredo public school district from 1983-87 and 1995-96.

She also taught at Sacred Heart School in Falfurrias, Texas, from 1958-61; Ste. Marie du Lac School in Ironton, Missouri, from 1966-67, St. Patrick Catholic School in Galveston, Texas, from 1970-75 and 1979-81; and Little Flower School in San Antonio from 1996-97. She taught at Ursuline School in Sligo, Ireland from 1975-76 and volunteered at St. Joseph School in Springfield, Illinois, from 2001-14. She moved to St. Louis in 2018 and Eureka in 2025.

Sister Agnes was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Kathleen Murray; Bridget Murray, Mae Beades, Eileen Lynn and Lily Barrett; and brothers John Murray and Thomas Murray. She is survived by sister Anne Slattery.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated June 5 at Mary Queen of Peace in Webster Groves Missouri, with interment following at St. Peter Cemetery.
