Sr. Mary Anne Holmes, OSU

Sister Mary Anne Holmes, OSU, died peacefully on March 16, 2024. She was 84 and living at St. Andrews at Francis Place in Eureka, Missouri.

The daughter of John Scott Holmes, Jr., and Adele Parsons Holmes, she was born on Dec. 17, 1939, in Galveston, Texas. She entered the Ursuline community on July 15, 1958, and professed her vows on Jan. 16, 1961.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in math from the College of New Rochelle and a master’s degree in institutional advancement from Creighton University.

During her many decades of ministry, Sister Mary Ann served in Texas, Missouri, Illinois, Minnesota, Louisiana and Rome, Italy.

She taught elementary grades at Ursuline Academy of Dallas from 1964-69 and was a teacher and principal at St. Patrick School in Galveston from 1969-74. She was business manager for O’Connell High School in Galveston, Texas, from 1974-79; principal of St. Thomas School in Decatur, Illinois from 1980-82; on staff at The Children’s Place in Malden, Missouri, from 1988-91; and bookkeeper for Westside Catholic School and St. Jude Catholic Church in San Antonio, Texas, from 1994-96.

Sister Mary Anne was treasurer of the Ursulines’ Villa Maria Retreat Center in Frontenac, Minnesota, from 1996-2008. From 2009-13, she served at the Ursuline Generalate in Rome, after which she joined the Ursuline community in New Orleans.

Sister Mary Anne also held local leadership positions throughout the Central Province. From 1982-88, she was provincial treasurer, serving in Crystal City, Missouri. She was a provincial councilor from 1993-99 while serving in Frontenac.

Sister Mary Anne moved to the St. Louis area in 2021, living most recently at Francis Place.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 13, at the Ursuline Academy chapel in Kirkwood, Missouri. Burial took place March 21 at St. Peter Cemetery in Kirkwood.
